GPS tracking and dispatch give the exact location and status in real
time
Load Tracking
One of the key factors for reducing the amount of lost loads has been
the development
of technologies in the freight industry. Many of these developments have
occurred in the last decade. While several companies continue to use
telephones to track shipments, many more are using tracking devices such
as GPS what are carried in the trucks. For a shipper to have access to
the tracking information they first use carriers who have this
technology, then they are issued a user name and password.
GPS tracking and dispatch give the exact location and status in real
time at any time this information is requested. GPS is the acronym for
Global Positioning Systems, which is a satellite-based system. The GPS
receives a constant transmitted signal from specific devices, which then
transmits the exact location of the device, trucks, cell phones, and
automotives can all be fitted with a tracking device. Many freight
brokers offer tracking services.
Tracking systems permit shippers and carriers to observe where trucks
are located, at what speed they are traveling, and even whether the
trailer doors have been opened. Some systems will send a warning signal
back to the main office or hub if a truck veers off course. Having the
knowledge of where trucks are give the shippers a relative idea of
whether the shipment will arrive at its destinations on time. From the
driver's point of view, GPS has assisted many truckers in trouble and
stranded by the side of the road, by transmitting their exact location.
This technology has also been responsible for relocating stolen goods
and hijacked trucks and has been credited in saving the life of one
driver who had suffered a heart attack and run off the road.
Valuable cargo travels the roads twenty-four hours a day and at any
given time, there are thousands of trucks and rigs on the road. These
drivers are doing their best to meet the needs of customers who have
requirements and commitments themselves. On-time deliveries and a
necessity for both the carrier and the customer. By having the ability
to track a shipment, if that rig breaks down and can't get moving,
dispatch can send another truck to deliver the goods.
