Refrigerated Freight
Temperature controlled freight is an enormous division of the shipping
industry. Think about how much food is transported daily across the
country. We have millions of fast food restaurants, grocery stores,
restaurants, hotels, hospitals, and schools which all require food
products to arrive refrigerated. Refrigerated trucks made it possible
for food that has to travel a great distances in a short amount of time to
avoid spoilage.
Hospitals and medical laboratories generally cannot accept shipments of
certain medicines, which have not been properly shipped. A degree
above or below the specified
temperature can harmfully effect the shipment. This also applies to
foods, which have been shipped to restaurants, hotels, hospitals, or
other institutional kitchens. New technology is continually being
developed to provide greater control of reefer temperatures. Some
specialized units even provide a continuous record of the cargo
temperatures from loading to unloading.
Many carriers have added refrigerated freight shipping to
diversification in their services in order to survive slowdowns or
setbacks in other division of shipping. Carriers who take on
refrigerated freight must have trust in their drivers because of the
increased risk of loss due to mechanical problems. Purchasing a
computerized reefers and properly training drivers are excellent
safeguards.
