The broker then negotiates the lowest possible rate for the shipper. The broker can do this because he has delivered sufficient enough volume business to the carrier that the carrier can many times lower his rates.

By working with a freight broker, potential disasters can be eliminated. Manufactures can keep the price of their goods down because carriers can transport product at a reasonable rate. By working with freight brokers, carriers are almost guaranteed that they will have loads and, probably, a return load because the broker can arrange this as well. Finally, the public benefits because the cost of the products remain low. When carriers increase their rates, this increase is passed along onto the consumer through by increasing the price of the goods.
